Sir Wilfred Thesiger at Milebrook House Hotel

Taking Tea with Haile Selassie – why did the Lion of Judah
come to The Milebrook?

Thank you to all that came to the event on the 4th April 2014

Haile Selassie may have been diminutive in stature, but in other respects lived up to his title "His Imperial Majesty the King of Kings of Ethiopia Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God". Claiming a blood line back to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, he led an eventful life, from plots and coups at home to honoured guest at our Queen's coronation. He had immense personal charisma and today would surely have ranked as an "A" list celebrity.

Sir Wilfred Thesiger at Milebrook House Hotel

However there were some very dark days during his reign from 1930 to 1974, in particular the invasion of his country in 1935 by Mussolini's fascist armies. Overwhelmed by the superior armaments of a modern army, Haile Selassie was forced to flee Ethiopia in 1936 when he came to England and took up residence in Bath, from where on occasions he travelled to Knighton to visit the Thesiger family.

This rather unusual scenario was recalled at a gathering at The Milebrook, the former home of the Thesiger family, on Friday 4th April 2014. Local people with memories of Haile Selassie's visits were warmly invited to share those recollections, and any pictorial memorabilia, with a view to a permanent record being established of these remarkable events. Amongst the party was Jean and John Broadbent who have been regular travellers to Ethiopia over the last 17 years, and who brought their own archive of material to give the Ethiopian side of the story which resulted in the visits to the area by such an illustrious personality.
